Elafonissi Beach Crete: Why It’s One of Crete’s Best Beaches

Scroll Down

Beautiful — but Not Always What You Expect

Elafonissi is undeniably beautiful.
Clear water, shallow lagoons, and soft sand that can take on a pink glow — especially when the light is right.
But it’s worth saying this out loud: many of the photos you see online are heavily edited. In real life, the colours are more subtle. Still lovely but quieter, softer, more natural.

Timing Makes All the Difference

In summer, Elafonissi beach can become very crowded.
It’s popular, easy to access, and often busy from mid-morning onwards. If you ask us, this beach truly shines outside peak season. Spring and autumn are ideal. Less crowdy, the colours feel calmer, and the whole area invites you to slow down rather than navigate around umbrellas.

A Beautiful Drive — and Worth It

It’s also good to know that Elafonissi is a longer drive from Plakias.
The route takes you through changing landscapes, small villages and open countryside, which already makes the journey part of the experience. If you have the time, it’s absolutely worth it.

Not a quick stop, but a day trip, and a beautiful one.

More Than Just a Beach

Elafonissi isn’t only about swimming.

It’s a beautiful place for walking too.

Sandy paths, shallow water crossings, open views — perfect for wandering, barefoot if you like, without any rush. When the wind is gentle and the crowds are gone, it feels peaceful and wide.

A place to explore rather than just sit.

Our Take

Elafonissi is worth seeing — just with the right expectations and at the right moment.

Go early, go outside summer, and take your time.
