Where River, Sea and Forest Meet
Preveli is one of those places that feels different the moment you arrive.
Not just a beach, not just a forest, but a meeting point of river, sea and palms that’s unlike anywhere else on Crete.
A Place with a Story
Preveli carries a quiet sense of history.
The area around the river and the nearby monastery played an important role during World War II, when it served as a refuge and escape route for Allied soldiers. Even today, there’s a feeling that this place has witnessed more than just passing visitors.

The Palm Forest and the River
The heart of Preveli is the palm forest, one of the largest natural palm groves in Europe.
Through the trees, a river winds it’s way before meeting the sea, creating a cool, shaded landscape that feels almost tropical.

Walking along the river is part of the experience. You follow narrow paths, cross shallow water, and move between palms that offer natural shade.
Walking and Exploring
Short walks through the palm forest, longer routes along the river, and scenic viewpoints higher up offer different ways to experience the area. Some paths are uneven, so good shoes make a difference.
Whether you explore for an hour or spend most of the day here, Preveli is always a good choice.
A Beach with Two Worlds
At the end of the river, you reach the beach where fresh water meets salt.
You can swim in the sea or cool off in the river. The contrast is refreshing, especially on warmer days.

When to Go
Preveli is a popular spot, especially in summer. During the middle of the day it can get crowded, with visitors arriving by car and boat. If you can, go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Outside peak summer months, Preveli feels more relaxed, allowing you to truly enjoy the palm forest, the river and the surrounding landscape.
Our Take
Preveli is not about rushing in and out.
It’s about wandering, cooling off, finding shade, and letting nature guide you.
