Bright turquoise waters, pale sand, and wide open views.
Balos is one of those places you’ve probably seen before on pictures. And yes, it really is that beautiful!
But just like with other iconic beaches in Crete, how you experience Balos depends very much on when you go and how you get there.
Not Close — But Memorable
It’s important to know that Balos is a long drive from Plakias.
This is not a spontaneous afternoon trip, but a full outing that takes time and planning.
That said, the journey itself is part of the experience. The landscapes change as you drive west, opening up into more rugged, raw terrain. If you enjoy road trips and wide views, the distance becomes part of the reward.

A Lagoon That Feels Otherworldly
Balos is known for its shallow lagoon, where colours shift between white, pale blue and turquoise depending on the light. The water stays shallow far out, making it easy to walk through the lagoon and explore.
It’s a place that feels vast and open, almost unreal at times, especially when the light is soft and the wind is calm.
Timing Is Everything
In summer, Balos can get very busy, especially in the middle of the day.
Boats arrive, paths fill up, and the quiet disappears quickly. If you ask us, Balos is at its best in spring or autumn, or very early in the morning. Fewer people, calmer water, and more space to actually take it in.

More for Exploring Than Settling In
Balos is less about settling down and more about exploring.
There are no beach bars or facilities, so it’s important to bring enough water and anything else you might need.
Reaching the beach involves a steep walk down and the climb back up afterwards. It’s doable, but good shoes and a bit of time help. For those who find the walk difficult, donkeys are sometimes available. We mention it for clarity, though it’s not something we personally encourage, out of respect for the animals.
Once you’re there, the experience is about moving around. Walking through the shallow lagoon, finding a quieter spot, watching the light change across the bay.
It’s a place to wander and take it in, rather than stay in one place for hours.
Our Take
Balos is undeniably impressive. But it’s not close, very busy in high season, and not an effortless stop.
Go with time. Go with patience. Go outside peak hours if you can.
Then Balos becomes what it should be: a striking, memorable place that stays with you long after the drive back.
