Dine Like a Local: Authentic Greek Food at Local Tavernas

Scroll Down

Greek food is about taste, mood, and place.

Just like with fine dining, this list is entirely personal. What one person loves, another might not connect with at all. These are tavernas we genuinely enjoy, places we return to, and places that feel honest and welcoming to us.

There are many good, cosy and authentic places in Plakias and the surrounding villages — far more than we can list here. This is simply a selection, based on our own experience. And if you’re ever unsure, we’re always happy to help you find something that fits your mood.

Plakias

Sirocco ~ Plakias

Sirocco sits right by the sea and feels exactly like what a coastal taverna should be.

Simple, honest Greek food, fresh fish, grilled dishes and relaxed hospitality. It’s the kind of place where lunch slowly turns into afternoon, and dinner never feels rushed.

Nothing complicated, nothing overthought — just good flavours, generous plates and the sound of the sea close by.

Veranda ~ Plakias

Veranda is relatively new in Plakias, located on the central square, in the spot where Nufaro Bar used to be. For those who don’t know it yet — it’s well worth discovering.

The atmosphere is always friendly and lively, the welcome warm, and the food consistently good. The menu is a mix of Greek and Albanian cuisine, with pasta, grilled dishes and comforting flavours that feel familiar and satisfying.

It’s one of those places that works any day of the week — easy, social and genuinely welcoming.

Surrounding Villages

Kouneno ~ Sellia

Kouneno is worth the short drive up to Sellia.

A traditional setting, generous dishes and flavours that feel rooted in the region. This is classic village cooking, where quality ingredients and simplicity do all the work.

It’s the kind of place that reminds you how good traditional food can be when it’s done with care.

Alekos ~ Armeni

Alekos is a true experience. Located just before Rethymno when coming from Plakias, this is not a place with a menu. Instead, dishes simply arrive at the table — a variety of starters, main courses and a few desserts — all for one fixed price.

Everything is cooked traditionally, generously and without fuss. It’s lively, social and unapologetically authentic. Come hungry. Stay open-minded. Trust the kitchen.

You sit, you eat, you share, you taste.

Goules ~ Goulediana

Goules is a bit further to drive, but absolutely worth it if you love traditional Greek food with something special. The flavours are familiar, but the execution feels thoughtful and refined.

Not a quick stop, but a destination in itself.

A Final Note

There are many honest, cosy and welcoming tavernas in Plakias — more than we could ever list. Part of the joy is discovering them yourself, following your instincts, and sometimes just walking into a place that feels right.

If you’d like recommendations based on your mood, the season or the time of day, just ask us.

We’re always happy to share what we enjoy — and help you dine like a local.
