Winter in Crete surprises a lot of people.
Not because it’s cold or grey — but because it isn’t.

What Winter in Crete is really like.

The island feels different in winter. Calmer. More open. The pace slows down, roads become quieter, and nature gently takes the lead again. Days don’t feel packed or rushed. They unfold naturally, shaped by light, fresh air and space.
Along the coast, temperatures usually stay mild, often between 15 and 20°C. Some days feel crisp and energising, others surprisingly warm. Perfect for long walks, sitting in the sun, or simply being outside without having to plan around the heat.

When Everything Turns Green Again

After the long, dry summer, winter brings colour back to the island.
Hills slowly turn green, olive groves deepen in colour, and the landscape feels softer, fresher, more alive.
From time to time, a rain shower passes through. It rarely lasts long and is often followed by clear skies and bright light. The air feels clean, the colours sharper. Valleys fill with mist, sunlight breaks through the clouds — quiet moments that make you stop without really knowing why.

Winter by the Sea in Plakias

In Plakias, winter shows a more honest side of the south coast.
The sea changes mood with the season. Some days it’s wild, with strong waves and dramatic skies — incredibly beautiful if you enjoy photography or simply watching nature do its thing. Other days the water turns calm and reflective, almost glassy.
On sunny winter days, it’s not unusual to take a quick dip in the sea, followed by a slow moment on the beach, warming up in the sun. Long walks along the shoreline become part of everyday life.

No crowds. No noise. Just space.

Calm, But Never Closed

Winter in Crete is calm, but it never feels shut down.
Rethymno stays lively throughout the season. Cafés fill with locals, streets feel social and warm, and most restaurants remain open — just without the tourist crowds. It feels relaxed and genuine, shaped by everyday life.

In Plakias, things continue at an easy pace. Supermarkets stay open, and a small selection of tavernas and cafés welcome guests all winter long. Everything you need is close by, without the rush of high season.

Sun, Sea and Snow — Sometimes in One Day

One of the most unexpected parts of winter in Crete lies inland.
While the south coast enjoys sunshine, the mountains often carry snow. Few people realise that winter here can include snowy walks and even skiing on the highest peaks. There are no ski lifts or resorts — just open landscapes, reached on foot or by snow scooter, shaped by silence and wide views.

It’s entirely possible to start the day by the sea in the sun, drive inland to walk through snow-covered mountains, and return in the afternoon to sit on a terrace by the water, jacket off, enjoying the warmth again.

It sounds unreal — until you experience it.

A Season That Invites You to Slow Down

Winter in Crete isn’t about highlights or ticking boxes.

It’s about space. Time.

Breathing room.

It’s for people who enjoy quiet beauty, changing light, long walks and small moments that don’t need to be rushed. For those who love nature, photography, local cafés and the feeling of having a place almost to yourself. In Plakias, winter feels peaceful. Calm mornings. Soft afternoons. Evenings shaped by silence, stars and the sound of the sea.

A different side of Crete — one that quietly stays with you.
