This Astrakiano Gorge hike in Crete started as a “quick Sunday walk”… and turned into a real adventure near Astraki and Neraidospilios.

If you’re planning the Astrakiano Gorge hike in Crete, these small things make a huge difference:

Some journeys are carefully planned. Others unfold by chance. And sometimes, you find yourself deep in the Cretan wilderness, wearing nothing but flip-flops and a sense of adventure.

Lost in Astraki: an unplanned hiking in Crete moment

“Where to today?” It was a simple Sunday question. We had the urge to explore, to uncover a new hidden gem on this island we now call home. So, with a game of darts and a map, fate decided—Astraki. A name unfamiliar to us, a place yet to be discovered. And as we would soon learn, an adventure we would never forget.

Neraidospilios and why hiking in Crete is never boring

Tucked away in the rolling hills near Heraklion, Astraki is a quiet, authentic village surrounded by vineyards and untouched nature. Here, time moves slowly and the landscapes tell stories of centuries past. But the real magic? That lies in the nearby Neraidospilios, the “Fairy Cave.”

A crystal-clear pool, hidden in the heart of nature, with water flowing through an ancient cave. According to legend, this is where fairies come to dance under the moonlight, their laughter carried by the breeze. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, listen and wonder if the old tales might just be true.

Into the Canyon—Or So We Thought

Not far from Astraki lies a network of gorges. And according to the internet, one of them—the Astrakiano Gorge—was an easy hike. A scenic stroll along a dry riverbed, perfect for a relaxed Sunday walk.

Well… the internet lied.

Armed with nothing but enthusiasm, flip-flops and a bottle of water, we set off. The first stretch was exactly as promised—gentle paths, towering trees and a historic Venetian arch bridge, the Astrakiani Kamara, standing proudly since the 16th century. A little further, we stumbled upon the Paterikos Watermill, one of the few remaining double watermills on Crete, its stone walls whispering stories of a time when water powered entire villages.

But as we ventured deeper, the trail became less of a trail and more of a wild guessing game. The familiar red hiking markers? Gone. Phone signal? Non-existent. And as the sun started to dip lower in the sky, we realized we were no longer following a path. The path was following us.

The Jungle Fights Back

Turning back wasn’t an option. The gorge walls were steep and the thought of retracing our steps as nightfall approached wasn’t exactly appealing. So, we pushed forward.

The vegetation thickened. Dry bushes turned into thorny nightmares, and soon, we found ourselves battling through a jungle of spiky branches, dodging unseen creatures rustling in the undergrowth. Shorts, sleeveless tops and flip-flops—we could not have been less prepared.

With every step, our legs became more scratched, our arms a map of red lines. But then, just when we thought we might need to start rationing our single bottle of water, there it was—a faded red dot on a rock, like a long-lost friend waving us home. And just beyond it, a wooden staircase leading to salvation (and held together by little more than wishful thinking).

Lessons learned while hiking in Crete (in flip-flops)

When we finally emerged, tired, scratched, but victorious, we couldn’t help but laugh. We had set out for a peaceful hike and ended up in an unintentional survival challenge. And yet, we wouldn’t change a thing.

Astraki surprised us. It tested us. And it left us with a story we’ll be telling for years.

If you love hiking in Crete, this unplanned walk near Astraki is a perfect reminder that even short hikes can turn into real adventures. So, if you ever decide to explore this hidden corner of Crete, take our advice:

1. Wear proper hiking shoes.
2. Bring more water than you think you’ll need.
3. Don’t believe everything you read online.
4. And if you see a path disappearing into the wilderness… maybe think twice before following it.
