The best beaches near Plakias Crete are some of the most varied and beautiful along the south coast, from wild coves to long sandy shores.

This guide brings together the best beaches near Plakias Crete, based on our own drives, swims, and spontaneous stops along the coast

If you’re exploring southern Crete, these are without doubt the best beaches near Plakias Crete to add to your route.

Preveli Beach – A Tropical Oasis Between River and Sea and one of the Best Beaches near Plakias Crete

One of Crete’s most unique beaches, Preveli is a natural wonder where a lush palm forest meets a turquoise lagoon. The view as you descend the scenic path is breathtaking—but keep in mind, what goes down must come up! If you don’t feel like tackling the climb back up, you can always take the boat.

Golden sand, the gentle flow of the Kourtaliotiko River and the shimmering sea beyond make this place unforgettable. Swim in the salty sea or take a dip in the cool freshwater of the river—yes, you have both options here! If you love a panoramic entrance, hike down the cliffside path. Prefer a more relaxed arrival? The short boat ride from Plakias is a great alternative (and definitely recommended for the return trip if you don’t like climbing!).

Souda Beach – A Relaxing Alternative to Plakias When It’s Windy

Just a short drive from Plakias, Souda Beach is the perfect escape when the winds pick up in the main bay. Sheltered by cliffs and surrounded by olive groves and palm trees, this serene spot offers soft sand and pebbles, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. A few cozy tavernas nearby serve delicious Cretan specialties—perfect for a lazy afternoon by the sea.

Triopetra Beach: a Classic among the Best Beaches near Plakias Crete– A Sunset Lover’s Dream

Named after its three iconic rock formations rising from the sea, Triopetra Beach is a vast, unspoiled stretch of golden sand with deep blue waters. Windsurfers love this spot, as the breeze can get strong—something that’s actually quite welcome in the summer heat.

But the real magic are the sunsets. They’re the kind that stop you in your tracks, where the sky burns in shades of gold, pink and orange. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve jumped in the car, with my camera in my hand, just to chase that perfect shot—summer, winter, it doesn’t matter. If you’re into photography (or just love a moment that feels like pure magic), trust me—this beach is calling your name.

Agios Pavlos Beach – A Secluded Paradise of Sand Dunes

Just west of Triopetra lies Agios Pavlos, a breathtaking beach surrounded by dramatic sand dunes and rugged rock formations. The untouched landscape creates an almost surreal beauty.

Fair warning—the sand gets burning hot in summer, so sneakers or sturdy sandals are a must (trust me, I learned the hard way!).

Pachia Ammos Beach – A Secret Haven

Located near Agios Pavlos, Pachia Ammos is a quiet beach known for its towering sand dunes and raw beauty. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape, this is the spot. No crowds, just the sound of the waves and a stunning backdrop.

Shinaria Beach – A Snorkeler’s Wonderland

For some of the clearest waters in Crete, head to Shinaria Beach near Plakias. This hidden gem is a favorite among divers and snorkelers, thanks to its rich underwater world. The seabed is teeming with colorful fish, sea turtles and even the occasional octopus (though, of course, sightings aren’t guaranteed).

Even if marine life isn’t your thing, the atmosphere here is pure relaxation—unspoiled and peaceful, just the way we like it.

Agia Fotini Beach – A Small and Picturesque Retreat

A tiny, tranquil beach perfect for those seeking solitude and crystal-clear waters. Surrounded by rugged landscapes, it offers great snorkeling opportunities.

There’s also a charming seaside taverna where you can enjoy fresh seafood right by the water—nothing beats that kind of lunch view!

Damnoni Beach – A Tranquil Retreat Near Plakias

With soft sand and calm waters, Damnoni Beach is perfect for a relaxing day without straying too far from Plakias. A few excellent seaside tavernas make it a great place for a long, lazy lunch by the sea. Simple, beautiful and easy to access.

But if you’re craving a little more action, Damnoni is also home to a watersports center where you can try everything from paddleboarding to jet skiing. Whether you’re in the mood for pure relaxation or a dose of adventure, this beach has something for everyone!

Ammoudi Beach

Ammoudi & Mikro Ammoudi Beach – A Duo of Hidden Wonders among the Best Beaches near Plakias Crete

These two small beaches near Damnoni are known for their peaceful atmosphere and striking turquoise waters. Mikro Ammoudi, in particular, is a popular choice for those who prefer a more secluded experience.

In summer, you’ll find that some visitors enjoy it as a nude beach. No problem with that? Then go for it! It’’s a perfect mix of swimwear and naturist vibes. It’s actually my favorite because of the small pebbles—no sticky sand clinging to your skin.

Glika Nera Beach (Sweet Water Beach) – A Hidden Beach Between Cliffs

Tucked between Loutro and Chora Sfakion, Glika Nera is a true paradise accessible only by boat or a scenic hike. Its name comes from the freshwater springs that bubble up through the sand, creating a unique mix of salt and fresh water.

It’s a bit further from Plakias, but absolutely worth it for a fun day trip!

Fragokastello Beach – A Beach with a Story

Located next to the famous Venetian castle of Fragokastello, this sandy beach offers shallow, crystal-clear waters, perfect for a relaxing swim. The contrast between the historical ruins and the turquoise sea makes it unforgettable.

Again, a bit further from Plakias, but if you love combining history with beach time, this one’s for you.

Kommos Beach – Endless Sand and Stunning Sunsets

Once the ancient port of Phaistos, Kommos Beach is a long stretch of golden sand with views of the Paximadia islets in the distance. As a protected area, it remains unspoiled and offers some of the most breathtaking sunsets on the island.

It’s a bit further from Plakias, on the eastern side, but absolutely worth the drive. If you’re up for a little road trip, you’ll be rewarded with endless space, a laid-back vibe, and a front-row seat to nature’s most spectacular evening show.

Lentas Beach – A Mythological Escape

Further from Plakias but well worth the trip, Lentas Beach is steeped in history and surrounded by dramatic cliffs. With its laid-back atmosphere, authentic tavernas and the mysterious lion-shaped rock overlooking the bay, Lentas is a place where time seems to stand still.
